It’s said that in ancient Vietnamese, Ha Long means “descending dragon” which originates from a legend of this beautiful land.
The legend goes that when the country was newly formed, the Vietnamese had to fight against fierce invaders coming in from the north through the sea. In their time of need, The Jade Emperor sent the Mother Dragon and her children to earth to help the ancient Vietnamese people defend their country.

This dragon print is inspired by both the mythical Asian dragon and our travels to Vietnam. When we visited Vietnam I fell in love with the landscapes and have wanted to work the karsts into a print for a long time. There’s just something so beautiful and serene about Vietnam, especially Ha Long Bay which is where this print is inspired by.
Although the legend is a violent one, I wanted to capture a more peaceful time with this illustration and unintentionally managed to produce something which reminds me a little of the Ghibli film Spirited Away.
This product is a risograph print, which means there is varying levels of texture and slightly different alignment to each print. Hopefully the close-ups give you a good idea of the texture we achieved with this print.
